Spring Cleaning

Published: 24 March 2020

We are all spending more time indoors, but outside the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing. While we are staying at home, Spring has sprung outside.

So, as many of us have some extra time on our hands in the coming weeks, now is a good time to prise open the windows and – slightly less excitingly – the cleaning supplies. But don’t panic! We’ve created the ultimate expert guide to Spring cleaning to help you on your way.

Channel your inner Marie Kondo

Let’s get personal. Does that garish old Christmas jumper you bought five years ago for the office party still spark joy?

Professional organiser and Netflix star Marie Kondo recommends going through each one of your belongings (from the clothes in your wardrobe to the tools in the garage) and if the item you’re holding doesn’t make you happy, say goodbye.

Recycle the stuff that’s falling apart and sell or donate things that are still in good shape – let someone else enjoy your treasures.

“Hinch” your bed and sofas

“Cleanfluencer” Mrs Hinch recommends turning and refreshing your bed and sofa as part of your Spring clean.

To “hinch” your bed, she says, flip your mattress around and hoover it to within an inch of its life – you’ll get rid of all the dust. Then, shake bicarbonate of soda evenly all over the mattress and leave it for a few hours before vacuuming again – it will lift out any nasty whiffs.

For the sofas, hoover all unwanted findings and use a lint roller before brushing the cushions with a mix of warm water and fabric softener – then use a body brush to give them a gentle scrub to revive the fibres.

Crystal clean windows

Lyndsey Crombie, also known as the ‘Queen of Clean’, advises that you don’t forget your windows as it can make a big difference to your home.

Remove any dust, cobwebs, leaves - and possible insects - with a duster brush before you start the cleaning. Then use hot soapy water to go over the frames inside and out, and repeat the process twice with clean water. To avoid smear marks, grab a dry cloth and wipe the frames dry horizontally.

Top tip: Queen of Clean recommends cleaning your windows on a cloudy day so the sun doesn’t dry the product before you have a chance to dry them.
