Future is bright

Womankind Worldwide is a global women’s right organisation working in partnership with women’s movements to transform the lives of women and girls everywhere. Its vision is a world where the rights of all women are respected, valued and realised.

We couldn’t agree more – and for this International Women’s Day, the SO Resi team got on board in a big way.  Here Diana Alam, SO Resi’s London Head of Sales, tells us what inspired her to take part, how it all developed, and how the event shaped up …

See us in action …

Here are just some of the inspiring images our team captured as we worked towards our target of 40,075km.

Womankind Worldwide and its partners work towards:

  • an end to all violence against women
  • women’s economic rights and control over resources
  • women’s equal influence in decision-making
  • women’s ability to exercise political power.

On a cold and grey February day, the question was asked … Would anyone like to take part in International Women’s Day, and who had ideas about what we could do? A few of us put our hands up to help organise something and so our journey began …

Choosing a charity

The very first step was to pick a women’s charity that we admired. With a vision of a world where the rights of all women are respected, valued and realised, Womankind Worldwide was a great match with SO Resi’s own values of equality, diversity and inclusion. With that in mind, we made the decision to support the charity’s fantastic work in our bid to highlight the importance of International Women’s Day 2021.

Bright ideas

Next we had to come up with ideas for how to raise some serious money, while attracting attention – and hopefully having a bit of fun too. Some of the first ideas we came up with included bake offs (sadly we’ve all eaten too much already this year) and sponsored walk or runs. Zumba was also mentioned and sounded like fun, but we needed something more – more challenging and more competitive.

21 days to change lives

Womankind Worldwide wants to change the world, so we decided to go global too! We made it our aim to try to walk, cycle, and/or run around the whole world in 21 days. That’s a slightly intimidating 40,075km, but we were up for it. Why 21 days?  Well, they say if you do something for every day for that long it becomes a habit – and when it comes to regular exercise, what a great habit to get into after the year we have all had, right?

Team spirit

For me, I truly believe exercise really helps mental health as well as physical, and there’s a lot of research out there to back that up. With those long months of lockdown behind us, I wasn’t the only one ready for a challenge that would benefit our health in all kinds of ways, while building in some fun and strengthening team spirit at the same time. Over 350 of the SO Resi team, valiantly signed up to take part, and friends and family joined in too, to help us achieve our targets.

On the run

By the time you read this, the event will be over, but we hope that the good exercise habits we’ve all picked up will keep going much longer. By this time next year, who knows – we might well be on track to make it round the world twice!
